Edmee Sophie Gail (born Garre) was a French singer and composer. She was born in Paris on August 28, 1775, and passed away on July 24, 1819. Sophie Gail was known for her beautiful singing and for writing many musical pieces, especially operas.

Early Life and Musical Beginnings

Sophie Garre grew up in Paris, France. Her father, Claude-Francois Garre, was a surgeon. From a young age, Sophie showed a great talent for music. She started learning to play the piano when she was a child.

A Young Talent

Sophie wrote her very first song, a type of music called a romance, when she was only 14 years old. This was a big achievement for someone so young! When she was 19, she married an editor named Jean-Baptiste Gail. They had one son together, Jean François Gail.

Career as a Singer and Composer

Sophie and her husband divorced in 1801. After that, Sophie Garre traveled around Europe as a singer. She performed her music and shared her amazing voice with many people.

Touring and Studying

While touring, Sophie also continued to learn and grow as a musician. She studied with famous music teachers like Fétis, Perne, and Sigismund Neukomm. These studies helped her become an even better composer. Her first major work for the theater was an opéra comique, which is a type of opera with spoken dialogue. Sophie Gail spent her life creating music and performing, and she died in Paris.
