The Sorbus pseudofennica is a very special type of tree. It is also known as the Arran service-tree or Arran cut-leaved whitebeam. This tree belongs to the Rosaceae family, which is the same family as roses and apples!

What makes this tree so unique is that it grows naturally only in one place: the Isle of Arran in Scotland. This means it is endemic to Arran. Sadly, it is currently in danger because its natural home is shrinking.

About the Arran Service-Tree

The Arran service-tree is a fascinating plant. It is thought to be a natural hybrid. This means it formed from two different types of trees mixing together. Scientists believe it is a mix of the Arran whitebeam and the rowan (also known as mountain ash).

How This Tree Formed

The Sorbus pseudofennica likely formed when pollen from a Sorbus arranensis tree mixed with a Sorbus aucuparia tree. It might have even mixed with S. aucuparia again later. Interestingly, the Sorbus arranensis itself is also a hybrid, formed from the rock whitebeam and the S. aucuparia.

It's quite common for different types of Sorbus trees to create new kinds of trees through natural mixing. This process helps create new and unique plant species.

Where It Lives and Why It's Special

This tree is found only on the Isle of Arran in Scotland. This makes it very rare and important to protect. Because it only grows in this one specific place, it is very sensitive to changes in its environment.

Protecting the Arran Service-Tree

The Sorbus pseudofennica is currently listed as Critically Endangered. This means it is at a very high risk of disappearing forever. The main reason for this danger is habitat loss. This happens when the natural places where the tree grows are destroyed or changed, often by human activities. Efforts are being made to protect its habitat and ensure this unique tree can continue to grow on the Isle of Arran.
