Sorum, South Dakota facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sorum is a small, quiet place in Perkins County, which is in the U.S. state of South Dakota. It's known as an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and buildings that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government. Instead, it's part of the larger county.

History of Sorum

Sorum began to take shape in 1908. It was named after a local businessman named Chris Sorum, who was important to the area.

Early Services in Sorum

A post office was opened in Sorum in 1910. This was a very important place for people to send and receive mail, especially before the internet! The post office served the community for many years, finally closing its doors in 1963.

At one time, Sorum even had its own newspaper called The Sorum Journal. We know it was being published at least in January 1911, which shows that the community was active and had ways for people to stay informed.

Nature Around Sorum

A small waterway called Rabbit Creek flows right through the Sorum community. Creeks like this are often important for the local environment and can be a place for wildlife.
