The South Bay Historical Railroad Society is a group in Santa Clara, California. They run the Edward Peterman Museum of Railroad History. This museum is inside the historic Santa Clara Depot. The society also takes care of the Santa Clara Tower and two other buildings nearby.

The Santa Clara Depot is a very old train station. It is the oldest one on the entire West Coast of the United States. Many different trains pass by the depot every day. These include passenger trains like Caltrain, the Altamont Corridor Express (ACE), and Amtrak trains such as the Capitol Corridor and the Coast Starlight. You can also see large freight trains from Union Pacific (UP).

The tracks in front of the depot are part of the UP Coast Line. This area is also near UP's Newhall Yard. Here, freight trains are put together, and train crews often change shifts.

What's Inside the Museum?

Inside the Edward Peterman Museum, there are many interesting things to see. You can find a library filled with books about trains and railroads. There are also displays of old railroad items and artifacts.

Model Train Worlds

A big highlight of the museum is its two large model railroad layouts. These are detailed miniature worlds with tiny trains, tracks, and buildings. One layout is in HO scale, and the other is in N scale. These scales show how big the models are compared to real trains.

Visiting Hours and Music

The museum is open to visitors on Tuesdays from 5 PM to 8 PM. It is also open on Saturdays from 10 AM to 4 PM.

On most second Saturdays of the month, from 12 PM to 3 PM, there's a special event. The Northern California Bluegrass Society (NCBS) and the South Bay Historical Railroad Society host a free bluegrass music jam. It's a fun way to enjoy music at the historic train depot.
