The South Fork Roaring River is a small river, about 4.6-mile (7.4 km) long. It flows into the Roaring River in Clackamas County, Oregon. This river starts at Rock Lakes, high up in the Mount Hood National Forest. It then travels northwest through the beautiful Cascade Range mountains. The South Fork Roaring River does not have any smaller streams flowing into it.

A Special Wild River

In 2009, the entire South Fork Roaring River became part of the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System. This means it is a very special river that the government protects. It was given the "wild" designation. This is the highest level of protection.

Why This River Is Protected

The area around the river is very important. It has very old forests with huge trees. There is also a deep canyon with many waterfalls. This natural area is a perfect home for animals like the northern spotted owl. Protecting the river helps keep these special places safe.

Roaring River Wilderness Area

The land around the South Fork Roaring River is also part of the Roaring River Wilderness. This is a large protected area, about 36,500-acre (14,800 ha) big. It was also created in 2009.

In the Roaring River Wilderness, some activities are not allowed. For example, people cannot cut down trees for wood. Also, you cannot use machines like dirt bikes or ATVs. But, you can still enjoy many outdoor activities. These include fishing, camping, hunting, and hiking. It is a great place to explore nature.
