The South Sutton Meeting House is an old and important building in South Sutton, New Hampshire. It is located at 17 Meeting House Hill Road. This building was made of wood in 1839. It is a great example of a style called Greek Revival architecture. This style was popular in the countryside. The meeting house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993. This means it is a special historical place.

About the South Sutton Meeting House

The South Sutton Meeting House sits on a small hill. It looks out over the village of South Sutton. You can find it on the west side of Meeting House Hill Road. This building is about one and a half stories tall. It is made of wood and has a pointed roof.

Building Design and Features

The outside walls are covered with wooden boards called clapboards. The building rests on a strong foundation made of granite stone. The front of the building faces south. It has two main doors. Each door has tall, narrow windows on its sides. These windows are called sidelights.

The frames around the doors are fancy. They are based on designs by a famous architect named Asher Benjamin. The pointed part of the roof, called the gable, is closed off. It has a fan-shaped design that hides an attic window. There is also one window above the two main doors.

Changes Over Time

The South Sutton Meeting House has not changed much since it was built. This is quite rare for such an old building. Around 1899, a cellar was dug under the building. This was done to put in a furnace for heating. The building also had some repairs after being hit by lightning.

History of the Meeting House

The meeting house was built in 1839. It was made for the local Congregationalist church group. Many churches were built in New Hampshire during the early 1800s. This happened because a new law was passed in 1819. This law said that churches and government activities should be separate.

Why This Building Is Special

The South Sutton Meeting House is very special. Many churches built around the same time were changed a lot later on. For example, some added stained glass windows. Others changed their inside look in the late 1800s. Some even had new parts added to them.

But the South Sutton Meeting House stayed mostly the same. This makes it one of the best examples of its kind. It shows us what buildings looked like a long time ago.
