The Southern Cotton Oil Company was a large factory in Columbia, South Carolina. It was also known as the Columbia Mill. This factory made oil from cotton seeds.

The factory was built a long time ago, between 1887 and 1919. It had seven main buildings. These buildings were used for different parts of making oil. Most of the buildings were made of brick. Two of them were made of metal. The entire factory has since been taken down.

What Was the Southern Cotton Oil Company?

The Southern Cotton Oil Company was a place where cotton seeds were turned into oil. This oil was used for many things. It could be used in food or for other products. The factory was an important part of the local industry.

How Did the Factory Work?

The factory had special buildings for each step of making oil.

  • The Seed House was where cotton seeds were stored.
  • The Linter Room removed tiny cotton fibers from the seeds. These fibers are called linters.
  • The Press Room was where machines squeezed oil out of the seeds.
  • The Machine Shop was used to fix and maintain all the factory's machines.
  • The Oil House stored the finished cottonseed oil.
  • The Cotton Storage Room held raw cotton.
  • A Storage Shed was used for other supplies.

The whole factory complex covered about 4 acres of land.

Why Was This Factory Important?

The Southern Cotton Oil Company was important to the history of Columbia, South Carolina. Because of its history, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. This list includes places that are important to the history of the United States. Being on this list means a place is recognized for its historical value.
