The Southern Region is a special area, or region, in the country of Eritrea. It is also called the Debub Region. The main city and capital of this region is Mendefera. This region was created on April 15, 1996. It was formed from two older areas called Serae and Akele Guzai.
Geography and Mountains
The Southern Region is home to Mount Soira. This mountain is the highest point in all of Eritrea. It stands tall at about 3,018 meters (9,902 feet) high. The region covers a total area of 8,000 square kilometers.
