The Spina Hotel is an old building in Ironton, Minnesota. It used to be a hotel and was built way back in 1913. People thought it would be a very important building for the town's future. It had shops and a fancy design. The hotel is special because it shows how much people hoped Ironton would grow during the iron mining boom. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. This means it's an important historical place in the United States.
The Hotel's Design
The Spina Hotel is a two-story building made of bricks. It's about 100 feet (30 meters) long and 75 feet (23 meters) wide. The corners at the front (northeast and southeast) are cut at an angle. These angled corners are where the main doors are located.
On the first floor, you can see decorative Cast iron columns. These columns are on the front of the building and on the angled corners. The building's style is described as "mild commercial classicism." This means it has a classic, formal look, but it was built for businesses.
The second floor has a big U-shape at the back. The two angled corners have fake balconies. These balconies are next to wooden columns. All along the second floor, there are pairs of sash windows. These windows have one pane of glass on top and one on the bottom. Above each window, there are arches filled with decorative iron panels.
Inside the Hotel
When the building was added to the National Register in 1980, the first floor had many different spaces. There was the hotel lobby, a bar, and a barbershop. It also had another shop and a post office. All the hotel rooms were located on the second floor. Some of the original details were still there at that time. These included wooden trim, metal ceilings, and old light fixtures.
A Look Back in Time
The Spina Hotel was built in 1913. This was a time when the local economy was growing fast. This growth was thanks to iron mining on the Cuyuna Range. The hotel's design was very grand. It showed that people expected the town to become much bigger and more important.
However, the big economic boom never fully happened. Ironton's population started to get smaller after 1920. The Spina Hotel is still standing today. It's a clear reminder of a time when people in Ironton were very hopeful about the future.
