Spira (confectionery) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Spira was a yummy milk chocolate bar made by Cadbury. It was shaped like a hollow, twisted spiral. Each pack came with two of these spiral chocolate fingers.

Spira first appeared in the mid-1980s. At first, you could only find it in certain parts of England, like the southwest and northwest. Later, it was sold all over the country.

How Spira Was Made

Cadbury started thinking about Spira in 1984. They had a cool new way to make chocolate in different shapes without needing molds. Cadbury also wanted to create more fun chocolate bars, especially for teenagers.

They tried out a few ideas for new chocolate bars. One idea was a twisted bar with a cartwheel shape, and they called it 'Rollers'. This one seemed like the best idea!

After making some changes to 'Rollers' and giving it a new name, it became the Spira bar. It was made especially for young people, around 15 to 24 years old.

Spira's Journey to Stores

Cadbury spent a lot of money to set up machines at their factory in Bournville to make Spira. They first tested selling Spira in one area of England, the Granada TV region.

Spira became very popular there, quickly becoming one of the top chocolate bars! But it was so popular that Cadbury couldn't make enough of it to keep up with everyone wanting to buy it.

So, they stopped selling Spira for a little while. Cadbury built more machines to make more chocolate. Then, they tried selling it in another part of England, the southwest, as a new test.

Finally, in 1989, Spira was launched and sold all across the country. It was a favorite chocolate bar for many years until June 2005, when it was no longer made.
