Park History
From Theme Park to Water Park
The land where Six Flags Hurricane Harbor Splashtown now stands was once a different kind of park. In the early 1980s, it was home to a theme park called Hanna–Barbera Land. This park was based on popular cartoon characters.
Hanna-Barbera Land only stayed open for two seasons. Its owners then sold the park to new investors. These new owners decided to change things up. They removed all the old rides. In their place, they built a brand new water park with many exciting water slides.
Even though the rides were new, some parts of the old park remained. You could still see the Victorian-style buildings, street lights, and pretty landscaping. The new water park, called Splashtown USA, opened its doors soon after.
New Owners and New Names
In the 1990s, the park changed hands a couple more times. First, the Morris Family bought it in 1994. Then, in May 1999, Six Flags took over. Six Flags already owned another water park in Houston called Six Flags WaterWorld. They bought Splashtown to stop it from being a competitor.
In 2000, the park was renamed Six Flags SplashTown.
Changes and Upgrades
In 2005, Six Flags closed its other parks in Houston, including Six Flags WaterWorld. After this, they made some big changes at Six Flags SplashTown. They brought over some of the popular rides from WaterWorld to SplashTown.
The park also got a fresh new look. It was cleaned up and renovated to get ready for its opening day in April 2006. The entrance got a new sign, and the buildings and ticket booths were updated.
More Ownership Changes
In 2007, Six Flags decided to sell SplashTown and six other parks. The parks were sold to a company called PARC Management. Then, PARC Management sold them to CNL Lifestyle Properties. CNL then rented the parks back to PARC Management.
However, this arrangement didn't last long. In 2010, CNL ended its agreement with PARC Management. In 2011, CNL chose a new company, Premier Attractions Management, to run the park. This company was led by people who used to work for Six Flags.
In 2013, CNL Lifestyle Properties gained the rights to the Wet'n'Wild brand in the United States. Because of this, SplashTown Houston was renamed Wet'n'Wild SplashTown. The park also received a huge renovation that cost millions of dollars.
In 2016, CNL Lifestyle Properties sold Wet'n'Wild Splashtown and other properties to EPR Properties. Premier Parks LLC continued to operate the park.
Back to Six Flags
On May 22, 2018, Six Flags took over the management of several parks owned by EPR Properties, including Splashtown. The park was renovated again during the off-season. In 2019, it officially changed its name to Six Flags Hurricane Harbor Splashtown.
Recent Times
In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic caused many places to close. Six Flags announced that all its parks would temporarily close. Six Flags Hurricane Harbor Splashtown was supposed to open on May 22, 2020, but its opening was delayed.
Later, the park announced that it would not open at all for the 2020 season. This was the first time the water park had not operated since it first opened in 1984. The park looked forward to welcoming guests back in 2021.
