The splendid longlegs (scientific name: Austrocnemis splendida) is a type of damselfly. It belongs to the Coenagrionidae family, which is a group of insects similar to dragonflies. These tiny, beautiful insects are known for their very long legs, which is how they got their common name!
About the Splendid Longlegs
Splendid longlegs are small and slender insects. They are often seen near water, where they spend most of their lives. These damselflies are an important part of the ecosystem in eastern Australia.
What It Looks Like
The splendid longlegs damselfly has a unique look. Its body is mostly bronze-black. This dark color helps it blend in with its surroundings.
- Males: Male splendid longlegs have bright blue patches on the sides of their bodies. They also have a light blue band near the end of their tail. These colors help them attract females.
- Females: Female splendid longlegs have red on their bodies. Unlike the males, they do not have a tail band. This difference in color makes it easy to tell males and females apart.
Both males and females have very long legs, which is a key feature of this species.
Where It Lives
You can find the splendid longlegs in eastern Australia. They prefer to live near water, especially in streams and slow-moving rivers. These damselflies like calm water where they can rest and hunt.
They are often seen sitting flat on plants that float on the water. This could be a waterlily leaf or another type of floating plant. This habit helps them stay hidden and catch small insects.
