Sport England is an organization that works with the government in England. It's part of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. Their main job is to help more people in England get involved in sports.

What is Sport England?
Sport England started in September 1996. It was first called the English Sports Council. It began working as Sport England in 1997.
This organization has two main roles:
- It helps give out money for sports from the National Lottery.
- It helps protect sports fields. If someone wants to build on a playing field, Sport England has to be asked for their opinion first.
The money Sport England uses comes from the government and the National Lottery. Since 1997, they have invested over £2 billion from the Lottery and £300 million from the government into sports across England.
How Sport England is Organized
Sport England is set up into nine different regions across England. They work closely with national sports groups. Their goal is to get one million more people playing sports.
They also encourage sports places to become special centers for their sport. This helps improve sports facilities.
Finding Sports Places with Active Places
Sport England has a website called 'Active Places'. This website helps you find sports facilities anywhere in England. You can use a map to search. You can also look for places in your area. It helps you find out more about sports locations.
In 2007, Sport England created 'Active Design'. These are guidelines to help plan new buildings and areas. The goal is to make it easier for people to be active and play sports. The updated 'Active Design' was released in 2015.
Leaders of Sport England
Leaders of Sport England have changed over the years. Derek Mapp was the Chairman in 2007. He left after a disagreement about money.
Michael Farrar took over for a short time. Then, Richard Lewis became the chairman in 2009. He used to be in charge of the Rugby Football League. In 2013, Nick Bitel became the new chairman.
Clubmark: Helping Sports Clubs
Clubmark is a special award from Sport England. It's for sports clubs in local communities. To get this award, clubs must meet certain standards.
The goals of Clubmark are:
- To make sure sports clubs are safe and fair.
- To improve coaching and how clubs are managed.
- To make sports clubs stronger and more successful.
As of April 2015, over 12,000 clubs had earned the Clubmark award.
Sport England's Logo
The Sport England logo is based on an older design. It comes from the 'sport for all' logo. This logo was used from the 1970s onwards.

History of Sports Councils
In 1997, the English Sports Council became Sport England. Before that, there was an organization called The Sports Council. The British government first created The Sports Council in 1965.
Old records from The Sports Council are kept at the Cadbury Research Library. This library is at the University of Birmingham. These records include papers, reports, and financial information from the 1940s to 2001.
