The Sproul's Cafe building is a special old building at 128 Main Street in Bar Harbor, Maine. It was built in 1880 and has a unique style called Second Empire. For many years, until 1903, it was a very popular spot for people who spent their summers in Bar Harbor.
This building is important because it's one of the few old commercial buildings left from when Bar Harbor was a super popular summer vacation spot. Because of its history, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. Today, a shop for tourists is located inside.
About Sproul's Cafe Building
The Sproul's Cafe building is on the east side of Main Street in the busy downtown area of Bar Harbor. It's a two-and-a-half-story building made of wood. It has a special kind of roof called a Mansard roof, which looks very steep. The outside walls are covered with clapboard, which are long, flat boards. The bottom of the building sits on a strong granite foundation.
The front of the building, facing west, has a main entrance that is set back a bit. Large plate glass windows are on both sides of the entrance and inside the recessed area. On the second floor, there are two windows that stick out, called bay windows. Between them, a screened porch with a railing was added later. The half-story under the Mansard roof has three small dormer windows with gable roofs.
History of Sproul's Cafe
Sproul's Cafe first opened in Bar Harbor in 1870, but at a different spot. It was run by a couple, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Sproul. Their cafe became very successful. Because of this, they decided to build this bigger and better building in 1880.
The Sprouls became famous across the country for their amazing food and catering services. They served many wealthy families who came to Bar Harbor for the summer. The Sprouls sold the building in 1903. After that, it was changed into a department store, selling many different kinds of goods.
