A Look Back: The History of Spurgeon
Spurgeon began around the year 1880. It started as a place where people lived and worked because of mining. A mining community is a town or area that grew up because there were valuable minerals, like lead or zinc, being dug out of the ground nearby.
The community was named after a local family, the Spurgeon family, who lived in the area. To help the people living there, a post office was opened in Spurgeon in 1884. This post office was important for sending and receiving letters and packages. It stayed open for many years, finally closing down in 1912.
