What is the Western Longnose Spurdog?

The western longnose spurdog is a slender and rare type of dogfish. It belongs to the Squalidae family of sharks. It gets its name from its long, narrow snout. This shark is not very big, growing to at least 55 centimeters (about 21 inches) long.

Where Does It Live?

This special shark lives in the waters near the northwest and southwest coasts of Western Australia. It can be found on the continental shelf, which is the edge of the land that slopes into the ocean. The western longnose spurdog lives very deep underwater. It prefers depths between 300 and 510 meters (about 980 to 1,670 feet).

What Does It Look Like?

The western longnose spurdog has a narrow head and a long, thin snout. It has a small, short barbel (a whisker-like growth) on its nose flaps. Its pectoral fins (the fins on its sides, like arms) have a slightly curved back edge. The first dorsal fin (the fin on its back) is quite tall and has a short spine.

Its body is light grey on top and lighter underneath. It does not have any white spots. The tips and back edges of its dorsal fins are a bit darker. You might also see a dark spot on part of the back edge of its caudal fin (its tail fin).

How Does It Reproduce?

The western longnose spurdog reproduces in a special way called ovoviviparous. This means that the mother carries her eggs inside her body. The eggs hatch inside her, and the young sharks are born alive. They get their food from the egg yolk while they are developing inside the mother.
