St. Anne Church is a beautiful and historic building located at 58 Church Street in Berlin, New Hampshire. It serves as a church for the Good Shepherd Parish, which is part of the Roman Catholic Church in Manchester. St. Anne Parish was the very first Roman Catholic group in Berlin, starting in 1867. In 2000, it joined with three other parishes – Guardian Angel, St. Joseph, and St. Kieran – to form the Good Shepherd Parish. The church building itself was built in 1900. It's a great example of Romanesque architecture in the area and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

Discovering St. Anne Church: Design and History
St. Anne's Church stands just north of Berlin's main downtown area. You can find it at the corner of Pleasant and Church streets. It's a large building made of red brick, shaped like a rectangle with a long, sloped roof. Two tall towers stand on either side of the front entrance, which faces south.
What Does the Church Look Like?
The towers on the church are very similar at the bottom. They both have tall, rounded windows on the first level and smaller, rounded windows higher up. The corners of the towers have special brick designs called "quoining." Above this, there's a decorative brick border. The tops of the towers are different, though. The tower on the left has an open square section with rounded openings, like a bell tower, and a pointed roof called a steeple. The tower on the right has a shorter, pointed roof with a statue of Saint Anne on top. Inside the church, you'll find many beautiful decorations made from carved wood and plaster.
A Look Back: The Church's Story
St. Anne's Church was first started in 1867. It was the very first Roman Catholic church in Berlin. The first church building was made of wood and built in 1882. Later, in 1899, that wooden church was moved and turned into a school for the parish.
The church building you see today was designed in 1900 by Archibald I. Lawrence. He was an architect from the local area. A builder named M. H. Roy from Lewiston, Maine, constructed the church. We don't know the names of the artists who created the beautiful decorations inside. By the 1970s, Berlin had four Roman Catholic churches. St. Anne's mainly served the people of French-American heritage. As mentioned earlier, all these parishes joined together in 2000 to become the Good Shepherd Parish.
