Building and Rebuilding

This chapel was first started in 1718. But something unexpected happened! An earthquake damaged it before it was even finished. An earthquake is when the ground shakes. Because of this, the chapel could not be officially opened.

Later, a person named Charles Ludwig von Sickingen-Ebernburg decided to rebuild it. He was the abbot of the abbey at Kornelimünster. An abbot is like the head of a monastery. He ordered the damaged building to be fixed. The work was finally completed in 1781.

In the same year, the chapel was officially opened. This special ceremony is called a consecration. It was dedicated to a saint named Anthony of Padua. Charles Caspar von der Horst, who helped manage the abbey, led the consecration.

Part of a Chapel Circle

The St. Anthony's Chapel is not alone. It is one of five chapels built around the main church of Kornelimünster. Think of it like a circle of smaller buildings surrounding a central, larger one.
