The idea for the museum came from the St. Charles Historical Society. This group was started in 1933. A very important person named Col. E. J. Baker helped make the museum a reality. He set aside a special area for it.

The museum first opened its doors in 1940. It was inside the St. Charles Municipal Building. Col. Baker had given this building to the city. He made sure that the city would always have a space for a history museum.

The Museum's New Home

The museum stayed in the St. Charles Municipal Building for many years. In 2001, it moved to a new location. This new home was an old building from 1928. It used to be the McCornack Oil Company building. The building was updated before the museum moved in during May 2001.
