What Was the St. Croix River Hounds?
The St. Croix River Hounds was meant to be a new team in the Northwoods League. This league helps college baseball players improve their skills. They play many games during the summer. The team's owners included former Major League Baseball (MLB) players Tom Quinlan and Robb Quinlan.
The Plan for the Team
The idea for the St. Croix River Hounds first came out in July 2017. The team hoped to start playing in the 2018 season. However, building a new baseball stadium takes a lot of time. The team needed a special place to play called the New Hudson Ballpark.
Delays in Starting
The start date for the team kept getting pushed back.
- In October 2017, the start date moved to 2019.
- In October 2018, it moved to 2020.
- In October 2019, it moved to 2021.
By April 2021, the stadium construction had not even begun. The team still hoped to start building that year. In July 2022, a new plan for the stadium was shared. It was for a smaller stadium with 1,400 seats. It was hoped to open by June 2023.
Why the Team Never Played
Despite all the plans, the St. Croix River Hounds never played a game. The team was not listed on the Northwoods League schedule for 2023. Later, the team was removed from the league's website. The River Hounds' own website now sends visitors back to the Northwoods League homepage. This means the team is no longer planning to join the league.
