St. George's Island is one of the main islands in Bermuda. It is located in the northeast part of the territory. The island is split into two areas: the town of St. George's and St. George's Parish. This island covers about 703 acres (2.8 km²) and is one of Bermuda's six most important islands.
Island History
St. George's Island was first called King's Island. It was the first part of Bermuda where many people settled. The town of St. George's has many of Bermuda's oldest buildings. These include St. Peter's Church and the State House. There are also many old forts, like Gate's Fort. Fort St. Catherine is near the very north of the island. It was built in the 1800s on top of a fort from the 1600s. This is where the first English settlers landed after their ship, the Sea Venture, crashed in 1609.
Island Connections
St. George's Island is separated from nearby St. David's Island by St. George's Harbor to the north. To the south, it's separated by a channel called Ferry Reach. Bridges and a causeway connect St. George's Island to the main island of Bermuda. These connections go through St. David's Island.
