Discovering the St. Germain dit Gauthier House History
This special house was built a long time ago, before 1848. This was when Wisconsin was still a territory, not yet a state.
Early Owners of the Historic House
When it was first built, the house belonged to people from Quebec, Canada. These were Québécois immigrants. The very first owner was Jean Baptiste Caron. Later, a man named Guillaume St. Germain bought the house. He and his wife, Madeline, moved in.
Moving the St. Germain House to a New Spot
In 1890, Nina Dousman McBride became the owner. She rented the house to Charles Gremore. Later, Gremore bought the house himself. He then moved it to a new spot. This new location was on an island in the mighty Mississippi River. This move happened around the late 1800s or early 1900s.
In 1902, George Coorough bought the house. A new part was added to the house in 1916. The Coorough family owned the house for many years. They kept it until 1978. That's when the City of Prairie du Chien took ownership.
Recognizing the House's Importance
The St. Germain dit Gauthier House is very important. It was added to the State Register of Historic Places in 2017. The next year, it was also added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's a special building that helps tell the story of the area.
