The Church of Saint Ignatius (known as Iglesia de San Ignacio in Spanish) is a very old Roman Catholic church. You can find it in the Montserrat neighborhood of Buenos Aires, Argentina. It is part of an area called the Illuminated Block, which has many historic buildings.
The first church building was made by a group called the Jesuits in 1675. It was built using adobe, which is a type of brick made from earth and straw. The southern tower and the front of the church were built in 1686. The rest of the church started being built in 1712. The church you see today was finished in 1722 and officially opened in 1734.
Saint Ignatius is the oldest church still standing in Buenos Aires. Because of its history, it was named a National Historic Monument in 1942.

A Look at the Church's History
How the Church Was Built
The first church was simple, made from adobe. The Jesuits, a group of Catholic priests, built it. They were very important in the early history of Buenos Aires.
Over time, the church was made much bigger and stronger. The current building took many years to complete. It shows a special style of building called Silver River Baroque. This style was popular in the region.
A Difficult Time for the Church
On June 16, 1955, the church faced a very sad event. There was a time of trouble in Argentina, with protests against the government of Juan Domingo Perón. During these events, many churches in Buenos Aires were burned. Saint Ignatius Church was one of them.
This was a very difficult period for the church and for the people of Buenos Aires. However, the church was later repaired and restored. It stands today as a symbol of history and faith.
