Saint Ignatius of Loyola' Church (in Spanish, Iglesia de San Ignacio de Loyola) is a very old and important Roman Catholic church. You can find it in the Illuminated Block area of Buenos Aires, Argentina, in a neighborhood called Montserrat. It was built by a group of priests called the Jesuits.
A Long History
The very first church building here was made of adobe (a type of mud brick) in 1675. Later, in 1686, the southern tower and the front part of the church were built. The rest of the church construction began in 1712.
The church you see today was finished in 1722. It was officially opened and blessed in 1734. This makes Saint Ignatius the oldest church still standing in Buenos Aires!
A National Treasure
Because it is so old and important, Saint Ignatius Church was named a National Historic Monument in 1942. This means it is a special place protected by the country.
In 1955, during a time of political unrest, some people caused damage to many churches in Buenos Aires, including Saint Ignatius. However, the church was later repaired and restored.
