The St. James Hotel in Red Wing, Minnesota, is a very old and beautiful building. It was built between 1874 and 1875. This hotel is special because it is an Italianate style building. This means it looks like buildings from Italy during the Renaissance.
The St. James Hotel is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of important places in American history. Being on this list helps protect the building. The hotel is also a member of Historic Hotels of America. This group includes hotels that have been around for a long time and are important to history.
A Busy City and a Grand Hotel
In the early 1870s, Red Wing was a very busy city. It was the biggest place in the world for selling wheat. The city had huge storage buildings for wheat, holding over 1 million bushels!
Because Red Wing was so wealthy, many business people and tourists visited. They needed a nice place to stay. So, eleven important business leaders decided to build a grand hotel.
The St. James Hotel opened with a big party on Thanksgiving Day in 1875. It quickly became one of the most fancy hotels along the Mississippi River. The hotel was very important during Red Wing's best years as a trading center and a stop for steamboats.
New Life for the Hotel
In 1977, the hotel was bought by the Red Wing Shoe Company. They worked hard to make the hotel new again. They also added a shopping area and a new part with more offices and hotel rooms.
For many years, the hotel had 61 guest rooms. Each room was decorated in its own special way. They were even named after riverboats that used to travel on the Mississippi River!
In 2010, a new suite was added to the hotel. This new room is in the old Red Wing Iron Works Building. This brought the total number of rooms to 62. The St. James Hotel continues to be a wonderful place to visit in Red Wing.
