A Look Back at St. John's–St. Luke's Church
How the Church Started
St. John's Church is the oldest German Protestant church in Detroit. It was founded in 1833. A pastor named Friedrich Schmid started it. He came to America from Switzerland. The very first church service happened on August 18, 1833. It was held in a carpenter's shop! Pastor Schmid led the church until July 1836.
Language and Growth
For many years, German was the only language used in church services. This continued until 1938. St. John's Church was very important for the community. It helped start twelve other German Protestant churches in Detroit.
Joining Together
Later, another church called St. Luke Evangelical Church was formed in 1891. Many years after that, in 1969, St. John's and St. Luke's churches decided to join together. They became one congregation.
The Church's Design and Look
Building the Church
The church building was first built in 1874. An architect named Julius Hess designed it. The front of the church has a large tower on one side. There is a smaller tower on the other side. These towers stand on each side of the main entrance.
Outside Changes
A big, tall window is a main feature on the front of the church. A small porch-like area is in front of the entrance. The outside of the church has changed a lot over time. The church was originally made of brick. But in 1915, the outside was covered. It was covered with a material called Formstone. This material is made of concrete. It was made to look like real limestone.
Inside the Church
The inside of the church has a "High Victorian Gothic" style. This means it has a very detailed and fancy design. The interior is painted white and gold. It also has beautiful wooden carvings. The way the church is lit inside is also special. It has a historic lighting system. The church also has a large Votteler organ.
