About the Complex
History and Purpose
The Saint Joseph Parish Complex was started in 1886. It was built to serve German-speaking Catholics living in Omaha. Many people of German heritage still attend the church today.
The church was built in an area where many German Catholic families lived. This area was mainly around South 16th Street and Center Street. Other German families, who were Protestant, settled in a different part of the city. They built their own German Methodist Episcopal Church in 1886.
Buildings in the Complex
The complex includes several important buildings. These are the church itself, a friary, a convent, and two school buildings.
- The friary was built in 1886. A friary is a home for friars, who are members of certain religious orders.
- The convent and the first school building were designed in 1901. A convent is a home for nuns, who are women living a religious life.
- A second school building was added in 1928. This building was designed by a well-known Omaha architect named Jacob Nachtigall.
