History of Saint Joseph Parish
Starting the Church in 1886
The Saint Joseph Parish was started in 1886. Its main goal was to serve German-speaking Catholics in Omaha. Many people of German heritage still attend this church today.
The church was built in an area where many German Catholic families lived. This area was mainly around South 16th Street and Center Street.
Buildings in the Complex
The Saint Joseph Parish Complex has several important buildings. These include the main church, a friary, a convent, and two school buildings.
The friary was built in 1886. It was designed by a person known as Brother Adrian Wewer. He also planned the convent and the first school building in 1901. Later, in 1928, a second school building was added. This one was designed by a famous Omaha architect named Jacob Nachtigall.
