Church History
Early Beginnings
Saint Luke's Church started in 1850. Back then, it was a Dutch Reformed group. They first met in rented rooms on 35th Street. In 1853, the group changed. It became a Lutheran church.
Moving to New Homes
The church moved several times over the years. In 1863, they bought their first building. It was a former Baptist church on 43rd Street. Then, in 1875, they moved again. This time, they went to 233 West 42nd Street. This building used to be the Forty-second Street Presbyterian Church.
Building the Current Church
Finally, the church bought land on West 46th Street. This is where their current building stands. They laid the first stone for the new church in October 1922. The church was officially opened in September 1923.
Joining a Larger Group
For many years, Saint Luke's was an independent church. It did not belong to a larger church group. But in 1987, it joined the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. This is a big Lutheran church organization.
Special Bible Classes
A famous pastor named Dr. Donald Grey Barnhouse used to teach Bible classes at the church. These classes were held on Monday evenings. Dr. Barnhouse was also known for his radio show, The Bible Study Hour. His classes at Saint Luke's continued until he passed away in 1960.
Theater on Church Grounds
A theater called Playhouse 46 at St. Luke's was once located on the church's property. It was previously known as St. Luke's Theatre.
Church Design and Style
Building the Church and Parish House
The church building was constructed between 1922 and 1923. Edward L. Tilton and his team designed it. The front of the church has special windows. These windows were designed by Francis Xavier Zettler. The building was finished in 1923.
Next to the church is a four-story building. This is called the parish house. It was built in 1922. Architect Francis Keally designed this building. It cost about $150,000 to build at that time.
Architectural Style
The church's design is a mix of two styles. It combines Gothic Revival and Art Deco styles. Gothic Revival uses elements from old European churches. Art Deco is a more modern, decorative style from the 1920s and 1930s.
Historic Recognition
Because of its history and unique design, Saint Luke's Church is very important. In 2007, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is a special building that is protected for its historical value.
