St. Mark's Episcopal Cathedral is a very old and important church building in Salt Lake City, Utah. It is located at 231 East 100 South. This church is the main church, or "cathedral," for the Episcopal Church in Utah.

The cathedral was built in 1871. This makes it one of the oldest Episcopal cathedrals in the United States. It is also the second oldest church building in Utah that has been used continuously for worship. A famous architect named Richard Upjohn designed the building. He used the Gothic Revival style, which looks like old European churches with tall arches and pointed windows. Because of its history and design, St. Mark's Episcopal Cathedral was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 22, 1970. This list helps protect important historical places in the United States.

History of St. Mark's Cathedral

The building of St. Mark's Cathedral began in 1870. The first stone, called a "cornerstone," was put in place under the guidance of Bishop Daniel Sylvester Tuttle. People from New York and Pennsylvania helped pay for the church to be built.

The cathedral was officially opened and dedicated on May 14, 1874. This means it was set apart for religious use. In 1935, a fire caused a lot of damage inside the church. However, the church was rebuilt to look just like its original design.

How the Church Helped the Community

The early Episcopal Church in Salt Lake City did a lot for the community. By 1880, church members had started several important schools and a hospital. They created Saint Mark's School for Boys and Rowland Hall School for Girls. They also opened Saint Mark's Hospital.

Today, Rowland Hall and St. Mark's School have joined together. This school now teaches students from kindergarten all the way through 12th grade.

St. Mark's Cathedral Today

St. Mark's Cathedral continues to help the community in many ways. They have programs like Hildegarde's Pantry, which helps people with food. They also have Community of Faith Celebrations, Community of Hope, and Feed My Sheep programs.

The cathedral is also a popular place for music events. The church hall has been used for many community gatherings over the years.

In 2005, work started on a new building called the Cathedral Center. This new center opened in early 2007. It includes a large room called the Dean's Hall, which can hold up to 300 people for meetings and meals. The center also has offices and other spaces that help the cathedral serve the community.
