History of St. Mark's Cathedral

Building the Cathedral

The first stone for St. Mark's Cathedral was placed in 1870. Bishop Daniel Sylvester Tuttle oversaw the project. Money for the church came from Episcopalians in New York and Pennsylvania. The cathedral was officially opened and dedicated on May 14, 1874.

Overcoming Challenges

In 1935, a fire caused a lot of damage inside the church. The main worship area was badly burned. However, the church was carefully rebuilt. It was restored to look just like its original design.

Community Impact

The early Episcopal Church helped the community in many ways. By 1880, church members had started several important institutions. These included Saint Mark's School for Boys and Rowland Hall School for Girls. They also established Saint Mark's Hospital. Today, Rowland Hall and St. Mark's School have joined together. They offer education for students from kindergarten through high school.

Stunning Stained Glass

The cathedral has some of the most beautiful stained glass windows in Utah. Four of these windows were made by Tiffany Studios in 1916. There are also three windows designed by Charles Jay Connick. Another special window was created by Franz Xaver Zettler. These windows fill the church with colorful light.
