St. Mary's Episcopal Church, also known as St. Mary's, Foggy Bottom or St. Mary's Chapel, is a special old church in Washington, D.C.. It is located at 730 23rd Street, N.W., in the Foggy Bottom area. This church is part of the Episcopal faith.
On April 2, 1973, St. Mary's Episcopal Church was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is an important building that is protected because of its history and unique design.
The Story of St. Mary's Church
St. Mary's Church was started in 1867. It was founded by people who used to go to another church called The Church of the Epiphany. This church is special because it was the first African American Episcopal church in Washington, D.C.
When it first began, the church community met in an old building. This building was a barracks from the Civil War. It was known as St. Mary's Chapel for Colored People. The very first church service there was held on June 9, 1867.
Cool Church Design
The church building you see today was designed in 1887. The architects who created it were Renwick, Aspinwall & Russell. They used a style called Gothic Revival architecture. This style makes buildings look like old European castles or cathedrals.
Some of the cool things about the church's design include its wooden roof. It also has beautiful stained glass windows made by Tiffany. These windows are famous for their amazing colors and patterns.
