St. Mary's Episcopal Church is a special old church in Washington, D.C. It is also known as St. Mary's, Foggy Bottom, or St. Mary's Chapel. You can find it at 730 23rd Street, N.W., in the Foggy Bottom neighborhood. This church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. This means it is recognized as an important historical site.
History of St. Mary's Church
St. Mary's Church was started in 1867. It was founded by people who used to be members of The Church of the Epiphany. That church is located in Downtown Washington, D.C.
St. Mary's was the first Episcopal church in the city for African American people. The church community first met in a building that was once a Civil War barracks. This building was called St. Mary's Chapel for Colored People. Their very first Morning Prayer service happened on June 9, 1867.
Church Building Design
The church building was designed in 1887 by architects Renwick, Aspinwall & Russell. It is a great example of Gothic Revival architecture. This style looks back to the grand churches of the Middle Ages.
The church has many beautiful details. Inside, you can see a timber roof. There are also special windows made of Tiffany glass. These windows were created by the famous company Tiffany & Co.
