St. Mary's Episcopal Church is a beautiful and historic church. It is located at 1307 Holmes Street in downtown Kansas City, Missouri. This church is part of the Episcopal Church, which is a Christian denomination. It follows a style of worship called Anglo-Catholic tradition. St. Mary's is also part of the Diocese of West Missouri.
History of the Church
St. Mary's was the very first Episcopal church in Kansas City. It was started in 1857. The church was first known as St. Luke's. Its name changed to St. Mary's in the 1870s. Another church, Trinity Episcopal Church in Independence, Missouri, helped to start St. Mary's. Before the current building was built, the church met in different places. One of these places was a building at 8th and Walnut streets.
Building and Architecture
The church building you see today on Holmes Street was built in 1887. It was designed in the Gothic Revival style. This style looks like the grand churches built in Europe many centuries ago. In 1978, the church was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is a very important historical building in the United States.
