A Look Back: Church History
How St. Michael's Began
The church community started in 1881. It began as a mission from St. Mary's on-the-Flats in Ohio City. This mission was created to serve the many German immigrants living on Cleveland's west side.
The first church and school building were built in 1883. Sadly, this building burned down on June 29, 1891. This happened while the new church building was still being constructed. The current church had its first stone laid in 1889. It was completed in 1892, which was five years earlier than planned!
Growing and Changing Community
The church community was largest in the 1950s. At that time, only about 25% of the people attending were of German background.
In 1971, the first Spanish Mass was held. This was for the increasing number of Hispanic people joining the church. Today, the church community is mostly Latin American. The church now offers Masses in both English and Spanish.
An annual Good Friday Procession often starts or ends at St. Michael's. This procession is a special walk that happens every year. St. Michael's and La Sagrada Familia church take turns hosting the start or end of this event. There is also a stop at St. Patrick's on Bridge Avenue. Here, people hear the first part of the Mass before continuing their journey. St. Michael's has become an important center for Hispanic culture in Cleveland.
Church Architecture
Design and Features
The church building is a great example of High Victorian Gothic architecture. It has two towers that are different heights. The taller tower reaches about 232 feet (71 meters) into the sky. The church also features three large archways.
Next to the church, there is a school building that is also very notable for its design. Construction on the school began in 1906 and it was finished in 1907. For many years, St. Michael's was known as one of the most expensive and artistic churches in the Cleveland Diocese.
