St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Cathedral is a beautiful church in New York City. It is located in the Upper East Side neighborhood of Manhattan. This cathedral is very important because it serves as the main office for the Russian Orthodox Church in North America.

History of the Cathedral

The story of St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Cathedral began in the early 1890s. At that time, a group of people who followed the Russian Orthodox faith started meeting on Second Avenue. They wanted to build a bigger, more permanent church.

In 1899, they started collecting money for a new building. Czar Nicholas II of Russia even gave them some money to help. The church was designed by an architect named John Bergesen, who was from Finland.

The construction of the cathedral finished in 1902. It was built at 15 East 97th Street in Manhattan. Since 1903, this cathedral has been the main center for the Russian Orthodox faith in the United States. In 1973, the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission officially recognized the building as an important city landmark.
