St. Paul's Church, also known as St. Paul's Church, Baden, is a very old and important church located in Baden, Maryland. This community is close to Brandywine, Maryland, in Prince George's County, Maryland. The church was first built a long time ago, between 1733 and 1735.

Over the years, the church building has changed. A porch was added in 1769. In 1793, a larger section was built on the south side. Later, in 1921, the main worship area was made wider and deeper. Inside, you can find the Bishop's Window. This special window remembers Bishop Thomas John Claggett.

St. Paul's Church is important for many reasons. It shows how religious life has continued since 1733. It also shows how a small, country church grew into a larger, cross-shaped building. The church's history also helps us understand how farming, especially tobacco, was important to the Church of England in Maryland during the 1700s. The building is made of brick. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.

The History of St. Paul's Church

How the Church Began

In 1692, the Church of England became the official church in the area known as the Province of Maryland. This happened because of a law passed by the government. At that time, Maryland was divided into 30 church areas called parishes. St. Paul's Parish was one of these first 30 areas.

Before 1696, St. Paul's Parish was part of Calvert County, Maryland. Then, Prince George's County, Maryland was created. After that, St. Paul's Parish became part of the new county.

Changes to the Parish Area

In 1704, the St. Paul's Parish area was divided into two parts. The northern part became a new parish called Queen Anne Parish. The rest of the area continued to be known as St. Paul's Parish.

St. Paul's Parish is one of four original parishes that share the same name. The others are St. Paul's Protestant Episcopal Church (Baltimore, Maryland), St. Paul's Church in Centreville, Maryland, and St. Paul's Church (Fairlee, Maryland).
