St. Philip's Episcopal Church is a very old and special church in Circleville, Ohio. It is located at 129 West Mound Street. The church building was finished in 1866. It has a unique mix of Gothic and Tudor Revival styles.

This church is also known as the "Little Church on the Mound." This is because it sits on the base of an old Native American mound. This mound was once called "Mount Gilboa."

History of St. Philip's Church

The first Episcopal church service in Circleville happened a long time ago. It was on May 26, 1817. The service was led by Reverend Philander Chase. He later became the first bishop for the Episcopal Diocese of Ohio in 1819.

The stone building we see today was built much later. Construction started in 1866. The church was officially ready for services in 1868.

Building Styles and Changes

The church building shows two main styles. The first is Gothic Revival. This style looks like old European churches and castles. It often has pointed arches and tall windows.

The second style is Tudor Revival. This style looks like old English country homes. It often uses decorative half-timbering.

In 1918, a new part was added to the church. This addition was a parish hall. It was built in the Tudor Revival style. Even with this new part, the church still looks very historic. Both building styles are meant to look like older English buildings.

A Recognized Historic Place

Because of its well-kept historic look, St. Philip's Church is very important. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. This list includes buildings and places that are important to American history.

St. Philip's Church Today

Today, St. Philip's is still an active church. It is part of the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Ohio. The current leader of the church is Reverend Canon David E. Getreu. He is the 43rd Rector of St. Philip's.
