The Admirals' Burial Vault in Sevastopol

St. Vladimir's Cathedral (also known as Владимирский собор in Russian) is a special Orthodox church located in Sevastopol. It was built after the Crimean War to remember the brave heroes of the Siege of Sevastopol, which happened between 1854 and 1855.

The Cathedral's Story

The idea for this important church came from Admiral Mikhail Lazarev. He thought it would be best to build it in Sevastopol, not in another place called Chersonesus as first planned.

This cathedral is a burial place for Lazarev and three of his students. These students were Vladimir Kornilov, Vladimir Istomin, and Pavel Nakhimov. All of them were brave admirals who died during the long siege of Sevastopol.

The church's design is called Neo-Byzantine. This style looks a bit like ancient Byzantine buildings. The first design was made by Konstantin Thon for a different cathedral. Later, a local architect named Aleksey Avdeyev changed it for St. Vladimir's.

The lower part of the church was finished and blessed in 1881. The upper part of the church was completed seven years later, in 1888.

The building stands tall, reaching about 32.5 meters high. Inside, the walls are covered with beautiful marble. A team of artists from Switzerland and Italy decorated the interior. The names of the heroes from the 1850s siege are written on the walls to honor them.

Sadly, the tombs of the admirals were damaged in 1931. The church also got more damage during the Second World War. But it has since been restored and remains an important historical site.
