The Admirals' Burial Vault in Sevastopol

St. Vladimir's Cathedral is a special church in Sevastopol, a city in Ukraine. It's an Orthodox church, which means it belongs to a branch of Christianity. This cathedral was built after a big conflict called the Crimean War. It was created to remember the brave heroes who fought during the Siege of Sevastopol from 1854 to 1855.

History of the Cathedral

The idea for this important church came from an admiral named Mikhail Lazarev. He thought it would be a great idea to build a cathedral in Sevastopol. This church was dedicated to Vladimir the Great, a very important historical figure. Inside the church, you can find the tombs of Admiral Lazarev himself. It also holds the tombs of three of his students: Vladimir Kornilov, Vladimir Istomin, and Pavel Nakhimov. These three brave admirals sadly passed away during the siege of Sevastopol.

Building the Cathedral

The cathedral's design is called Neo-Byzantine. This style looks a bit like ancient Byzantine buildings. The first design was made by Konstantin Thon for another church. However, a local architect named Aleksey Avdeyev changed the design to fit St. Vladimir's Cathedral. The lower part of the church was finished and blessed in 1881. The upper part of the church was completed seven years later, in 1888.

The building stands very tall, reaching about 32.5 meters high. Inside, the walls are covered with beautiful marble. Artists from Switzerland and Italy worked together to decorate the interior. The names of the heroes from the 1850s siege are written on the walls to honor them.

Challenges Over Time

Sadly, the tombs of the admirals were damaged in 1931. This happened during the Soviet era. The church also suffered more damage during the Second World War.

There were some difficult times for the church and its leaders. Archbishop Joachim (Levitsky) was believed to have been killed inside St. Vladimir's Cathedral around 1920 or 1921. Another church leader, Aleksei Nazarevsky, was also thought to have been killed around the same time. The exact details of how and when they died are not fully clear.
