Remembering Heroes
Right next to the main entrance of the church, there is a special memorial. This memorial remembers the brave people who died during the First World War. It lists many different names and the military groups they belonged to.
One of the people remembered there is Cyril Edward McLaughlin. He was a brave officer in the Royal Navy. He received a special award called the Distinguished Service Order in 1919. This award was given to him because he was very courageous. He helped clear dangerous underwater bombs, called mines, from the sea. He did this even when enemies were shooting at them. Sadly, Cyril McLaughlin died after the war ended, on October 5, 1919. He was serving on a ship called HMS Humber in North Russia at the time. He was buried in a cemetery called Troitza Churchyard in Archangel.
