Home to Thousands of King Penguins

Saint Andrews Bay is famous for its incredible wildlife, especially its King penguins! These penguins form huge groups to raise their young. The colony at Saint Andrews Bay is one of the largest in the world. More than 150,000 king penguins live here. Because king penguins have a long breeding cycle, their colonies are always busy with birds. You can see penguins at Saint Andrews Bay all year round!

Glaciers and the Bay

Several large ice rivers, called glaciers, are near Saint Andrews Bay. The Cook Glacier used to reach all the way into the bay. However, since the 1970s, this glacier has moved back from the beach. Where the glacier once was, there is now a lake and a gravel beach. Two other glaciers, Heaney Glacier and Buxton Glacier, are also found inland from the bay.
