St Brides Wentloog is a small village, or hamlet, located in South Wales. It is found to the southwest of the city of Newport. People sometimes spell its name in different ways, like St Bride's Wentloog or just St Bride's. In Welsh, its name is Llansanffraid Gwynllŵg.
Where is St Brides Wentloog?
This small community is part of an area called Wentlooge. It also belongs to the Marshfield electoral district. St Brides Wentloog sits on the Wentloog Level. This land was once covered by the Bristol Channel. It was later reclaimed, meaning it was made into dry land.
The area is very flat. It has many large and small drainage ditches. These are called "reens" by the local people. They help to keep the land from flooding.
A Look Back in Time
The village has an old church named St Bride's Church. It is named after Saint Bridget. The church is a very old building. Most of it was rebuilt in the 1400s. It is made of stone. The church shows two old building styles: Decorated and Perpendicular.
Inside the church, you can see a special part called the chancel. There is also the nave, which is the main part where people sit. It has a south porch and a tall, strong tower. This tower holds six bells. Four of these bells were made in 1734. They even have old messages written on them.
A special sign inside the church porch shows something important. It marks how high the water rose during the big floods of 1607.
St Brides Wentloog is also famous for being the birthplace of Lyn Harding. He was born in 1867 and passed away in 1952. Lyn Harding was a well-known actor. He performed on stage, in silent movies, in movies with sound, and on the radio.
