St Mark's Church is a Church of England parish church located in Forest Gate, a part of east London. A parish church serves the local community and is a central place for worship and activities.
History of St Mark's Church
St Mark's Church is found on Lorne Road. It started as a "mission church" from Emmanuel Church. A mission church is like a smaller, newer church set up to serve a growing area.
Building the Church
The church was built to serve the area between Wanstead Flats and Romford Road. At first, services were held in a rented cowshed! In 1888, land was bought for a proper church building. The church was built in three main parts between 1893 and 1898.
In 1894, St Mark's was given its own separate parish. This happened by taking parts from the areas covered by Emmanuel Church and All Saints Church.
St Mark's Today
Today, St Mark's Church follows the evangelical tradition within the Church of England. This means it focuses strongly on the Bible and sharing the Christian faith.
