St Mary's Church is a beautiful church located in the village of Appledore. It stands right on the Quay, looking out over the River Torridge. This church is an important part of the Appledore community.
A Look at Its History
St Mary's Church has an interesting past. The first stone for the church was placed in 1836. Just two years later, in 1838, the church was officially opened.
Built with Ship Parts
One cool fact about St Mary's Church is how some of its parts were made. A famous sailing ship called the Marco Polo helped build it! Wood from this ship was used to create a special wooden screen inside the church. Imagine a ship helping to build a church!
Why Was It Built?
People believe the church was built because of events that happened long ago. In 1662, some people who had different religious beliefs were asked to leave a nearby church in Northam. These people, sometimes called "Protestant dissenters," then started their own place of worship in Appledore in 1699. This led to the creation of St Mary's Church later on.
