History of St Peris's Church
How the Village Name Changed
The church of St Peris is found in the village of Nant Peris. This village was once called Llanberis. However, in the 1800s, a new town grew about 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) away. This new town took the name Llanberis. So, the original village became known as Old Llanberis, and later, Nant Peris.
When Was the Church Built?
St Peris's Church has a long history, dating back to at least the 1300s. Some parts of the church, like the side sections called transepts, were added later in the 1400s or 1500s. In the 1600s, the church was made longer towards the east, and the chancel (the area around the altar) was rebuilt.
Restorations and Updates
Over the years, the church has been repaired and updated many times.
- In 1848, an architect named Henry Kennedy from Bangor helped restore the church.
- More work was done in 1893. The walls were re-plastered and re-decorated. Some new wooden parts were also added. This work cost about £230 at the time.
- In 1899, even more improvements were made. The walls were covered with wood, a special wooden screen called an oak reredos was put behind the altar, and decorative tiles were laid around the altar area. Evan Parry from Menai Bridge carried out this work.
- The lychgate, which is a roofed gateway often found at the entrance to a churchyard, was built in 1929.
Beautiful Stained Glass
The church has a lovely stained glass window at the east end. This window was given to the church in 1926 by John Christopher Lloyd Williams. It was designed by an artist named W. Aikman.
