Our Lady Immaculate & St Robert's Catholic Church is a special church in Harrogate, a town in England. It is a parish church for the Roman Catholic Church, which means it's a local church where people go to worship. This beautiful building is also a 'Grade II listed building.' This means it's important because of its history and special design, and it's protected so it can be kept for a long time.
History of St Robert's Church
The building where the priest lives, called the presbytery, was built in 1864. The church itself was designed by two architects, George Goldie and Charles Edwin Child. It was finished in 1873.
The church officially opened on June 5, 1873. A very important church leader, Cardinal Henry Edward Manning, was there for the opening.
One of the priests who worked at St Robert's was Canon William Pope. He was known for leaving the Church of England to join the Roman Catholic Church.
Church Additions and Style
In 1906, a special part of the church called the Lady Chapel was added. This chapel was built by Marten of Leeds. The church is built in the Gothic Revival style. This means it looks like the grand churches built in the Middle Ages, with pointed arches and tall windows.
The church, including its special plaster pictures called Stations of the Cross, was officially made sacred on May 10, 1930. This ceremony was performed by Bishop Joseph Cowgill of Leeds. The Stations of the Cross are a series of images that show events from the last day of Jesus's life.
Church Organ
A large musical instrument called an organ was put into the church in 1899. This organ was made by a company called William Hill. You can find more details about this specific organ on the National Pipe Organ Register.
