St Salvator's Chapel |
St Salvator's Chapel is a very old and important building at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. It was built a long time ago, in 1450, by a person named Bishop James Kennedy. The chapel is known for its beautiful Late Gothic style.
It is one of two special chapels at the university. The other is St Leonard's Chapel. St Salvator's Chapel has been updated many times over the years to keep it looking good. Today, it is the main chapel for the university.
Life at the Chapel
Students and visitors often come to St Salvator's Chapel for different events. They have regular church services, including special singing services called Choral Evensong. The most popular services are held on Sundays.
After the Sunday services, students take part in a famous tradition called the "pier walk." They walk together to the pier and back, wearing their special academic clothes. The chapel also hosts important events like graduation ceremonies and weddings for people who used to study at the university. The chapel has its own choir, which sings at most services.
What's in a Name?
The name St Salvator is a way to refer to Jesus Christ. The chapel was built for a college that Bishop Kennedy also started.
St Salvator's Chapel is special because it is the only university chapel in Scotland with a full set of six bells. These bells can be used for something called change ringing, which is a special way of ringing bells in a pattern. Four new bells were added in 2010. This was part of the university's 600th birthday celebration and also marked 550 years since the chapel was built.
