History of St Serf's
Starting the Congregation
The church community in Shettleston began in 1899. A Reverend named George Crane helped to start it. He was also in charge of St John's Church in Baillieston.
Early Worship Places
By 1914, the church group was meeting in Eastmuir School. They used the school for their worship services. In 1917, a special building was put up. It was made of corrugated iron and served as a "mission" church. This means it was a smaller church connected to St John's in Baillieston.
Building the Current Church
The church building you see today was built in the early 1930s. It was officially opened on December 22, 1934. The church was designed by architects named Whyte and Galloway.
Changes Over Time
Over the years, St Serf's Church changed its connections to other churches.
- In 1941, it became part of Christ Church in Bridgeton.
- Then, in 1948, it joined St Mary's Cathedral.
- In 1970, it went back to being part of St John's Baillieston.
Forming a United Parish
In January 1996, something new happened. St Serf's Church joined with two other churches. These were St John's Baillieston and St Kentigern's Dennistoun. Together, they formed a larger group called the East End Team Ministry. This helps them work together in the community.
