Kids Encyclopedia Facts

St Stephen's Church was a church building located on Green Street in East Ham, a part of east London. It was an important local church for many years.

The Story of St Stephen's Church

How the Church Was Built

The main part of St Stephen's Church, called the nave and aisles, was finished in 1887. A few years later, in 1894, more sections were added. These included the chancel (the area near the altar), a north chapel, a south chancel aisle, vestries (rooms for clergy), and a choir area.

St Stephen's Church also helped start three smaller churches. These were like branch churches, helping to serve more people in the area. These mission churches were St Alban's Church, St Michael's Church, Rutland Road, and St Cuthbert's Church on Florence Road.

War and Its Impact

The church building was repaired and updated in 1938. However, just two years later, it was badly damaged. This happened during the London Blitz, which was a time when many bombs fell on London during World War II. St Cuthbert's, one of its mission churches, was also destroyed during the war.

After the damage, the people who went to St Stephen's started meeting at St Michael's Church instead.

The End of St Stephen's

After the war ended, a decision was made not to rebuild St Stephen's Church or St Cuthbert's Church. St Stephen's was taken down in 1954. The area that St Stephen's Church used to serve became part of the parish (church area) of St Edmund's.
