History of St Alban's Church
How the Church Started
St Alban's Church began as a small mission church around 1889. It was started by St Stephen's Church to help people in the growing Upton Park area. This first church was on Boleyn Road.
A few years later, in 1897, a new, small brick church was built on Wakefield Street. This new building helped the church serve more people.
Building the Permanent Church
The church grew, and in 1903, it became its own parish. This meant it had its own dedicated area to serve. In the same year, the main parts of a new, bigger church were finished. This new church was built right across the street from the brick church on Wakefield Street.
More parts were added to the church later. In 1934, new sections like vestries, a Lady Chapel, and the chancel were completed. These additions made the church even more complete and beautiful.
Wartime Damage and Repair
During World War II, London faced many air raids, known as the London Blitz. In 1940, St Alban's Church was damaged during these attacks. It was a difficult time for the city and its buildings.
However, the church was repaired and restored in 1949. This showed the community's dedication to their church.
St Alban's Today
Today, St Alban's Church is an important part of the East Ham Team Parish. This larger group is also known as the Parish of the Holy Trinity. It works together with other churches in the area. These include St Mary Magdalene's Church, St Bartholomew's Church, and St Edmund's Church. Together, they continue to serve the people of East Ham.
