St Thomas' Church, Blackburn facts for kids
St Thomas' Church was an Anglican parish church located in Blackburn, Lancashire, England. It was a place where people of the Anglican faith could gather for worship. The church was built on the eastern side of Lambeth Street, between Billinge Street and Skiddaw Street.
Designing the Church
The church was designed by a skilled architect named E. G. Paley. He was from Lancaster. The first ideas for the church were drawn up in 1859. However, the actual building work did not start until a few years later, in 1864. The church was finished in 1865.
Building Materials and Size
Initially, the plan was to build the church using bricks. But the person paying for the church wanted it to be made of stone instead. So, the design was changed to use stone.
The church was also planned to be quite large. At first, it was designed to hold 766 people. But this number was later increased. The final design allowed for 1,054 people to sit inside. Building the church cost £4,469, which was a very large amount of money back in the 1860s!
The End of St Thomas' Church
St Thomas' Church served its community for many years. However, it eventually closed its doors in 1977. After it closed, the building was taken down.
