Building St Thomas' Church

The church was designed by a famous architect named Edward Graham Paley. He was from Lancaster. The first ideas for the church were made in 1859. However, the church was not actually built until a few years later, between 1864 and 1865.

Design Changes and Costs

When the church was first planned, it was going to be made of brick. But the person paying for the church wanted it to be built with stone instead. So, the plans were changed.

The church was also designed to hold more people than first thought. It was originally meant to seat 766 people. This number was later increased to 1,054 people. Building the church cost £4,469 back then. That was a lot of money in the 1860s!

What Happened to the Church?

St Thomas' Church served its community for many years. However, it eventually closed its doors in 1977. After it closed, the church building was taken down. It is no longer there today.
