A Look at Its History
The Estadio Juan Carmelo Zerillo was built a long time ago, opening its doors in 1924. For many years, it was the main place for Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata to play their home games.
However, before the 2006 Clausura football tournament, the stadium was temporarily closed. This happened because of government orders, likely for safety reasons or to make improvements. During this time, the Gimnasia team played their games at a newer stadium nearby, called the Estadio Ciudad de La Plata.
The Return Home
Fans were very happy when the stadium reopened! In June 2008, Gimnasia received all the necessary permits to return. They played their first game back at El Bosque since 2006 on June 21. It was an important match against Lanus, part of the final round of the 2008 Clausura tournament.
