Standard Chartered Hong Kong is a bank in Hong Kong. Its full name is Standard Chartered Bank (Hong Kong) Limited. It is part of a bigger banking group called Standard Chartered. This bank is one of only three banks allowed to print Hong Kong dollar banknotes.
A Look at History
The story of Standard Chartered in Hong Kong began a long time ago. In 1859, a bank called The Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China opened its first branch here.
Just a few years later, in 1862, this bank started printing Hong Kong dollar banknotes. It still does this important job today!
There's a tall office building in Central, Hong Kong called the Standard Chartered Bank Building (Hong Kong). It's named after the bank.
Becoming a Local Bank
On July 1, 2004, Standard Chartered made a big change. It officially became a local company in Hong Kong. This means its businesses in Hong Kong now operate as a separate company called Standard Chartered Bank (Hong Kong) Ltd. This helps the bank follow Hong Kong's rules better.
Printing Money
Standard Chartered Bank (Hong Kong) Limited has a special role. It is one of only three banks that can print banknotes for Hong Kong. The other two are the Bank of China (Hong Kong) and The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation.
The bank has been printing money since the 1860s! This makes it a very important part of Hong Kong's money system.
